MacBook Pro:: No Startup Chime On Late 2008/OS Sound Is Working Fine? Jul 3, 2009 Here's a bit of a strange one, noticed over the last couple of days that the start up chime was getting quieter, then today no sound what so ever when turning it on. Now from my understanding of it, the chime is a bit like a POST beep on a PC? Hear it once and every thing's fine? Otherwise the MBP is booting up fine, dual booting it and have sound in OS X and Win 7?!

Suspect I may have a HDD issue, as had to run chkdsk /f /r the other day and had to stop it after 12 hours as it was still on stage 4 of 5 @ 18%, and it seems to be running slower, also the HDD is becoming more vocal. I'm going to run a full AHT on the unit, was just wondering if anyone else has come across something like this before? Similar Messages:. ADVERTISEMENT Apr 25, 2012 My Late 09 MacBook Air has been working a treat, not a spot of bother. All of a sudden, about 5 minutes ago, I've gone to go online to download some research papers (I'm.trying. to write an essay) and it won't load anything. Not even my Twitter app.

Drivers for the sound card are installed but I get Zero sound out of them, ive restored all settings to their default with regards to the sound ( not that I ever change them anyway ) volume can be cranked right up but I literally get no output. If there is no sound / volume / speakers on your MacBook MacBook Pro iMac and all other Mac ranges there are certain steps you can follow to fix these issues.

It is connected to the right network, which is working absolutely fine on every other device in the house (windows computers, iphone etc). I've turned it off and on twice, the way that us clueless folk do. Now I don't know what to do.

Info: MacBook Air Nov 10, 2010 could you please provide some help as i started up my mac this morning and there was no sound on there except the startup chime and i have tried the help here: URL but it doesnt help and there is no red light in the headphone slot. Feb 11, 2012 recently i just got a used mac pro (early 2008), it was working great for 2 days, but then as yesterday, when power it on, it will chime, get the grey screen, but then the chime will repeat multiple times. (it does this sometimes) idk what the problem is, i have tested the hardware everything passed, tried resetting PRAM, didnt help. So idk if its hardware related or software related. Its running 10.6.8. Sep 19, 2010 however today suddenly the superdrive decided to make a 1-2 second 'seeking' sound at.every. startup.

There is no dvd inserted nor have i used it even once in this week. It does this at the grey apple screen at the same time the apple 'chime' sounds. I am pretty sure it didn't to this up until today, i am not particularly concerned but why would it start doing this after a week on its own? May 28, 2007 I've lost all sound on my G4 iBook running OS 10.4.9. I still get the start-up chime every time I reboot, but there's no sound at all inside OS X itself. System Preferences says there are 'No output devices found.'

System Profiler says I have 'No built-in audio.' I have tried repairing disk permissions. I have tried creating another user account and signing in. I have tried zapping the PRAM, resetting the PMU, and trashing all my cache files for both the system and my personal login.

I have tried booting with Command-S and running a file system check (fsck -yf), but am told that the system 'appears ok.' Nothing has helped. I continue to get the start-up sound on boot, but nothing inside OS X. Oddly, if I hook my M-Audio podcast mixer, the system detects my audio as 'M-Audio,' and I get sound if I use the headphone jack on the M-Audio unit itself (i.e., I can listen to iTunes, watch a YouTube video, etc.). But as soon as I unplug the unit, System Preferences reverts back to 'No output devices found,' and my machine resumes its maddening silence. Since I use this machine pretty much only for podcasting and video editing, it's pretty useless to me without sound.

Can someone help me, before I completely freak out? I was up until about 2am last night trying to resolve this. How can I get this machine to 'remember' the fact that it has 'Built-in audio?'

Aug 31, 2010 kind of a stupid question but i know you can change the background of the login window so i was wondering if this was possible. When you logon instead of the apple sound could you change it to something else (short 15 second audio clip of star wars theme for example) -OR- would it be possible to have the computer play 'welcome to bcrguy's macbook' after i put in my password and it goes to the home screen from the login screen? Oct 2, 2009 I am listening to the same songs on Itunes playing on a late 2008, Early 2009 Macbook Pro 15 compared to a brand new MBP 15 and the speakers (or the sound) seems much better on the older Pro still running Leopard (more base and deeper sound), as opposed to the new one running SL. Has anything changed that would account for this?

Are they the same system running off of different operating systems, or has the hardware changed. And is there anything to do about it? Aug 25, 2009 I have this problem a wile now. When I play music (or watch a movie) I can hear there is something wrong with my sound output. It's hard to describe, but is is like someone is playing with an equalizer. The high pitch sounds (voices) are constantly changing in volume.

Maybe the basses to, but its hard to hear that. BUT, the strange thing is, when I play something in windows (parallels) it is much better. The bass is here more dimmed for some reason.

Mar 31, 2009 Here is whats happening: my 3 y.o. 15 MBP is connected to external speakers (Bose MusicMonitor) and every time there is a sound, any system sound, say an email in, a volume chirp, or a Skype chirp, anything at all, I hear an audible POP, before hearing the actual sound, in fact the POP sort of overlays the sound.

I hear the second POP sometimes, after the sound has sounded, so to speak, and sometimes the second one does not happen at all. To me it reminds me of the Pioneer Amp my dad used to have in the 70's, when you first turn that thing on, it would produce an audible POP.

So, back to to this, it sounds like an amplifier POP by being awaken by the system, and I'm inclined to think it is the MBP's audio 'amplifier' on its board. Oh, btw, both the speakers and the MBP's volume is set to low. Jun 21, 2012 I bought an oldish MacBook 13' Unibody (late 2008) and when I got it one of the first things I did was to install Mac OSX Lion. Everything was working fine, until I applied an update that made the trackpad stop working (it only accepts clicks, no touch is recognized). This is the 'Trackpad Firmware Update' from the automatic updates. When starting this firmware update it appears a window with a status message, cancel and Update buttons.

After clicking the update button, it starts installing, appears to complete, status changes to 'Finishing.' , and Update button comes back active at some point.

After that I have tried (unsuccessfully):downloading and installing the update directly from Apple Support URL thing, but using the 'root' accountleaving the computer on overnight to see if actually 'finished' the processReset PRAM PVRAM - URL - URL palm pressing over 30 seconds on the trackpad (read this on another thread.?) Info: MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.4), MacBook 13 Unibody (late 2008) Apr 5, 2007 My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows).

Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen?

Or is it a software thing? May 6, 2010 I have a mid-07 Santa Rosa MBP. When I turn it on, nothing comes on the screen (not even backlight), but I'll hear the startup chime and 2 seconds later, it reboots and does the same thing. Here is what I have tried: 1. Reset PRAM 3. Replacing HD 4.

Replacing PRAM/CMOS battery 5. Tried booting off DVD (but it reboots too fast after the chime) Jun 7, 2010 Hi guys, I have a 2.26ghz Macbook and when i start it up the chime keeps repeating over and over again until i get sick of it and hold the power button to force shut it down, sometimes it will start up fine after that and boot right up and sometimes it keeps repeating again, then i just leave it for a few hours and try again and it will usually work. Also over the last day or so i've been getting a mixture of the repeating chime and the blank white screen with no apple logo and grey spiral. Other than this problem the computer is running flawlessly, does this sound like a hardware or software problem? I've already tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, I've ran the hardware test which came up clean, checked the drive with disk utility and eventually reformatted the HDD and reinstalled Mac OSX but still no change.

I'm not running any extraordinary software just google chrome, Skype etc. So that shouldn't have any thing to do with it. Jul 22, 2010 I just replaced my LCD. It was working fine, but now just stopped working.

It's a mid-2009 A1286 15in Macbook Pro. The computer itself works fine and I tested it using an external monitor. I can FAINTLY make out the display on the screen, so I'm guessing it is a backlight issue? Don't mid-2009 don't have display inverters?

I also tried resetting the pram and SMC. May 12, 2012 Upon start up I hear optical drive checked, then get a start up chime but the screen does not light up. I have shut down by holding down power button for 10 seconds also pulled battery and A/C power. Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4), Mac Cube, Mini, iBook SE Nov 25, 2008 Is there really a 'Late 2008' model?

If so, what is the difference.I ask because I recently got a MacPro and according to Apple's hardware test, it is an Early 2008. May 15, 2009 So my girl friend was using my IBook G3 and shut it down normally she says. We then went to turn it on and we will hear the chime but then it will get stuck on that first gray screen, nothing else comes up, no spinning no nothing. Hard drive is not making any different noise, I just don't know whats up. Mar 5, 2012 I have a Macbook 2009 that wont turn on.

When you press the power key you hear the normal boot chime but no picture appears. The laptop was given to me without any hard drive, so I installed a blank 250GB HDD.

The HDD has no OS on it, and I am not sure how it is currently formatted as it is new. Even when I use an external screen and regardless of whether a HDD is present the macbook does not show any sign of life on the screen or external screen but still chimes. I know it would be a good idea to boot with restore discs etc, but even if no OS is present surely the screen should still come on and display the gray and apple logo? I did all the resets and holding button configurations on startup, such as reset PRAM.

Info: MacBook Jan 10, 2010 I installed Stuffit Deluxe 10 on my new MBP and ever since I have installed it every time I startup or reboot my MBP the startup chime sounds muffled. All the other sounds are fine though. Mar 29, 2012 I've currently got a macbook pro which currently has 4Gb ram and I want to know if it can be upgraded to 8Gb. URL Mode A1621, Boot Rom MB41.00C1.B03 I've read a number of postings which indicate 4GB is the official supported amount by Apple, 6Gb will work (unofficially) and this posting URL indicates some late 2008s can be upgraded to 8gb after a EFI update. However mine comes up as a MacBook pro 4,1 not 5.1 (shame). Am I on the latest EFI/Boot Rom? Can I simply install the latest and it will - Can this machine with the latest boot rom/snow lepoard run to 8Gb ram?

Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8) Jun 26, 2012 I had always read that the max. Ram I could install on the Macbook 13inch late 2008 model, model 5,1, 2.4 Ghz, boot rom version MB51.007D.803, SMC Version 1.32f8, was 4GB of ram. I received an add from 'Other World Computing' stating that I can install 8Gb to this model.

I am running Lion and do a lot of photography so the idea of increasing ram is interesting. However, I don't want to waste my money. Info: MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 4GB ram Sep 4, 2014 When I start my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 15') I get the familiar audio chime. However, when it finishes startup and I get to my desktop, I have no audio, and the audio icon up top is grayed out. The audio output jack works fine.

I can use speakers and headphones. I've tried the solution of wiggling around a headphone plug in the jack, as well as doing the same with a toothpick. I've also reset the PRAM. For some reason, the problem persists. When I open sound settings in preferences, the only device listed is 'Digital Out' and there is a message under it saying 'The Selected Device has No Output Controls.' Info: MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Oct 9, 2010 MacBook Pro started giving me terrible glitches, Where 1) Applications will quit unexpectedly and 2) I will get the gray cover over the screen with text saying I need to restart my computer. This is happening quite often and I would really like it to stop.

I noticed it all started happening after I installed ProTools LE. I've already erased my internal hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard, then put my necessary files back. I have also upgraded my RAM and HDD, about 3 months ago and it's been working flawless until I installed ProTools LE. Oct 27, 2010 My macbook late 2008 unibody has been a wonderfull companion for the last 2 years but the time has come to give it a slight upgrade.

I'm thinking about upgrading my hard drive. The need to use parallels and an ever growing photo library are stressing the limits of my current 160GB hard drive. Nov 2, 2010 I am about to upgrade my late 2008 aluminum MacBook 2.4 Ghz to 6GB of ram from owc but wanted to know if the will support 8GB, running at full stability. From what I can tell from other threads is that the owc 8GB kit doesn't work is this correct? If it can handle 8GB of ram I will do that instead of 6GB. Nov 4, 2010 I'm thinking about upgrading to a SSD but wanted to know if my MacBook (see sig) had a Serial ATA speed of 3 Gigabit or 1.5. The System Profiler says: Vendor:NVidia Product:MCP79 AHCI Link Speed:3 Gigabit Negotiated Link Speed:1.5 Gigabit Description:AHCI Version 1.20 Supported under Serial-ATA.

So I'm not sure if that means the the port is a 3 Gigabit port but the HD is only 1.5. Does that mean the SATA cable is a 1.5 Gigabit speed, and I'd need a new cable, or what? Also if it is 3 Gigabit port that means it's SATA II, right? Dec 29, 2010 My macbook display is just too small for watching movies at my girl's pad, so I was wondering if I can connect the macbook to her Toshiba TV (non-flat pannel/HD)?

What adaptor or connector do I need? Oct 28, 2008 Check out this site and read step 12. URL It stating that the new Macbook aluminum Montevina chipset appears to support up to 8gb. Is this true??

Jul 6, 2009 Ok, so I just received my early Xmas present(s) from my work. (Got a whole bunch of Mac goodies). On to my question, I have my 24' ACD sitting in my office, and my 2008 Macbook, I want to know if there is a way to connect the ACD to the Macbook. It's not the most important thing in the world, because I'm getting my 17' MBP in Oct., but until then, I would like to use the ACD with my Macbook if possible.
